Kristin McCoskey, a seasoned runner with a heart of gold, has embarked on a remarkable journey with TeamALS as the last to secure her spot on the roster for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Having previously participated in various running events, including the BoA Chicago Marathon in 2008, 2009, and 2011, Kristin’s passion for running in support of ALS is unwavering!
Congratulations on being the final registered runner for the ALS United Greater Chicago’s team. What motivated you to take the leap and join?
I was inspired by the stories shared at the First Look for Charity and I started contemplating stepping up my efforts for ALS! I’m turning 40 this year and had been contemplating how I wanted to celebrate this milestone. I was already planning to run a half marathon the week of my birthday, and with the full marathon, I realized I could run ~40 miles (39.3) for 40 years within two weeks of my birthday! It came together as the perfect way to celebrate my milestone and to pay it forward.
What kind of support have you received from friends, family, or colleagues as you train and fundraise for this event?
Everyone I asked if this was a crazy plan all encouraged me to go for it. They all believed I can do it! A colleague of mine will be helping with my training plan to ensure I can get in all 40 miles. Thanks, JT!
Are there any particular challenges you anticipate, and how do you plan to overcome them during the race? Two things have challenged me in the past…heat and miles 20-24. If we happen to get another day in the 80s like 2008, I will just go slow and watch my heartrate. For Miles 20-24 I will have a Peloton guided run with a favorite instructor preloaded on my phone to motivate me!
What message or cause do you hope to bring attention to by participating as a runner for ALS United Greater Chicago?
Just to reinforce and support the mission of ALS United Greater Chicago. The work you all do everyday is so important to those families living with ALS. And we all dream of a day when ALS will be a disease of the past.
In the spirit of camaraderie, what words of encouragement do you have for your fellow runners?
Marathon training truly is about the journey not just the finish line. Take the time to enjoy the process. Each time I go out for a run, my mantra is to enjoy the moment. Rather than looking to the finish line, I try to find something to enjoy in the moment…it might be the fresh air, the moment away from my never-ending responsibilities, the sense of accomplishment for just getting out the door…it doesn’t have to be monumental, but it helps shift my mindset, especially on a challenging run!
Any additional message you’d like to share?
I’m grateful for the ALS United Greater Chicago team and I’m excited to embark on this journey together.
