Care Services Coordinator – Social Worker, ALS United Greater Chicago
ALS United Greater Chicago proudly welcomed Snovea Porter, MSW, LSW to the Care Services team in October 2024. Based in Chicagoland, Snovea brings a decade of experience in supporting individuals with diverse abilities, and has already become a valued resource for people living with ALS and their families.
A Licensed Social Worker, Snovea earned her Master of Social Work from Aurora University and her BA in Psychology from Northern Illinois University. Since 2015, she has worked in a variety of roles that reflect her deep commitment to helping others live more fully and with dignity. “I have always wanted to help others since I was young,” she shares. “When I decided on social work, it felt like I belonged.”
Her connection to ALS United began through a graduate school friendship with fellow Care Services Coordinator Brianna, who spoke highly of the organization and its mission. That introduction sparked a journey that Snovea now says feels like the right fit in every way.
When asked about the most rewarding moment so far, Snovea recalls a voicemail from a caregiver thanking her for helping secure essential medical equipment. “Being able to fulfill wants and needs like those, is the best feeling.”
Snovea approaches every family and individual with compassion and care. “Everyone with ALS will have very different experiences and needs,” she explains. “There’s no one-size-fits-all formula. I approach every situation with an open mind and compassion.”
Outside of work, Snovea is proud to be a mom and finds joy in spending time with family and friends—or escaping into a good book. Her dream travel destinations? The Maldives for a tropical getaway, and Edinburgh, Scotland for its stunning architecture.
When asked what advice she’d give to anyone who wants to make a difference, she said: “Remove yourself from the equation. Helping others means fulfilling what they truly want or need, and not what we think would help.”
