Reflecting on 20 Years: A Message from Our Board Chair

Dear Friends,

As Board Chair of ALS United Greater Chicago, I was asked to write a letter reflecting on the last year and the 20 years of progress that we have made.

I went back to my Google Photos of my Mom from 2010 and 2011, and needless to say it brought back a flood of memories. I can see us now on the Chicago lakefront pushing Mom in her wheelchair at the ALS walk, with the pouring rain soaking us and hearing her laughing and loving it! Mom would pass just a few months later. That was just the beginning of my own and my family’s involvement in this truly amazing organization. Through the years I was lucky enough to become an Ambassador and then a Board member and now Board Chair. I look back at all the walk events, golf outings, and marathons and recently our involvement in the Chicago Auto Show’s First Look for Charity.

However, when I look back, the thing that I really am most proud of is the wonderful people that I have gotten to know and hopefully helped to make their fight against ALS a little better. So many great people fighting ALS, what an honor to get to know you and your families. Many of you became like family. I can never forget you and what you brought to my life.

That brings me to this last year. We are proud members of ALS United and continue to lead the fight against ALS. Our remarkable CEO and President, Julie M. Sharpe, continues to lead our organization, always keeping our goal of serving those in need of our services. Her staff is equally remarkable; I couldn’t be prouder than when I get to see them in action, whether it’s at the various fundraisers or helping individuals living with ALS and their families.

On behalf of the Board, I want you to know we will continue to be good stewards. When you donate your time, talent, and money, we promise that your donation is not only appreciated but will be used wisely. To those who have donated, thank you. I ask that you continue with your generosity so we can continue to serve those fighting ALS.

I wish you all nothing but the best in the upcoming year. Thank you for letting us
help you.

Sincerely,

Michael Trafton, Board Chair
ALS United Greater Chicago
