Occupational Role in Supporting Those Living with ALS

Javea Stepney, OTR/L

Occupational Therapy plays a pivotal role in treatment for individuals living with ALS. As ALS is a progressive condition, individuals begin to have decreased strength in their arms and hands. This can lead to a decreased ability to use these body parts during daily activities. Occupational Therapists provide holistic, client-centered plans of care tailored to the needs of that specific person. These plans of care help individuals manage their daily routines as independently as possible, despite the progression of ALS.

An Occupational Therapist may teach someone how to do daily activities in a modified way. Occupational Therapists educate people on energy conservation strategies, home modifications, adaptive equipment, wheelchair seating, and emotional coping strategies. Occupational Therapists recognize that participating in meaningful activities should not end with a progressive condition, but that everyone deserves a quality of life.

To receive Occupational Therapy services, please consult your healthcare provider for a referral. Below are tips and resources for managing ALS.
