Introducing Dr. Carlos Lara

Dr. Carlos Lara is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at the University of Chicago and a board-certified neurologist with a passion for treating neuromuscular diseases. Specializing in conditions like ALS, myopathies, myasthenia gravis, and hereditary neuropathies, Dr. Lara is known for his expertise in advanced diagnostic techniques, including neuromuscular ultrasound and electromyography (EMG). In this Q&A, Dr. Lara shares insights into his medical journey, his approach to compassionate patient care, and his vision for the University of Chicago’s ALS clinic.
1. Where did you complete your medical training?
I graduated as a Medical Doctor from the Central University of Ecuador, completed the neurology residency at Loyola University Medical Center, and then completed a Clinical Neurophysiology fellowship and Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship at the University of Chicago.
2. What got you interested in neurology, and in neuromuscular disease in particular?
I had the privilege of participating in an ALS multidisciplinary clinic very early on in my residency training, which inspired me to seek a better understanding of neuromuscular diseases and their impact on our communities.
3. What is your approach to patient care? Patient care goes beyond a mere clinical encounter.
Patient care is honoring the trust from the patients and families deposited on the health providers by establishing a compassionate and honest guidance to navigate toguether the different stages of the disease and the nuances of the health system.
4. What are your goals for the University of Chicago ALS clinic and team?
My goals for the ALS clinic and the team at the University of Chicago is to maintain the highest standards of care available and expand our services to our community by contributing to the improvement of the multiple and complex processes required to deliver excellent care. Also, to be involved and collaborate with research and education for strengthening our team in the fight for better treatments and early detection of ALS.
