From First Race to Marathon: A Runner’s Tribute to Her Father

Melanie Dittrich, ALS United Greater Chicago Ambassador and Team ALS Runner

“I am super excited to be participating in both the Christie Clinic Illinois Race Weekend Half-Marathon and the Bank of America Chicago Marathon with Team ALS. I am running in memory of my dad, Rick, who passed away from ALS in 2009.

I have always wanted to be a runner. It wasn’t until October 2024 that I participated in my first race, a two-mile run.

I remember thinking it was too much of a reach to run a marathon just one short year later. After speaking with Sarah and a few friends, I realized it absolutely was something I could do.
I have cried so many happy tears because of the outpouring of support I’ve received for fundraising. Being able to call myself a runner, while being involved with ALS United Greater Chicago, means the world to me.

Knowing that I have had even a small part in the fight against ALS is indescribable. I would highly encourage anyone who might be a bit scared just to take that first step. It has truly been an empowering journey.”
