Devin Lacey Wiseman is a dedicated runner with a heart set on making a difference. With a rich racing history, including multiple Chicago Marathons and numerous IL Race Weekend races, Devin has been a steadfast member of TeamALS for six years.
What sparked your interest in participating in the Christie Clinic Illinois Race Weekend with ALS United Greater Chicago?
Any chance I have to run a race or participate in an event with this organization, I will take! They are always memorable, fun, and no matter what, you know you’ll have the best support crew the whole way. I’ve run this race a number of times because it is by far my favorite half-marathon course. The fact that I now get to run my favorite course while doing it for the best cause, just makes it that much better.
Can you share a personal story or connection you have with ALS that motivated you to run in this event?
My Grampy was diagnosed with ALS in 2016 and passed away in 2017. He was my buddy and my best friend. He’s my motivation to always keep going.
Beyond the physical aspect of running, how do you see this event contributing to the larger mission of supporting individuals and families affected by ALS?
Running for an organization promotes the awareness. Fundraising, training, running, walking, volunteering, donating, each of these actions show support for the families and individuals.
As you look forward to the race weekend, are there specific moments or aspects of the event that you’re most excited about?
My favorite part of any race that I run for ALS in, is when I’m running and start to see the ALS tent. I know exactly what will be there and that’s all the volunteers cheering you on. It’s relieving, in a way, and so motivating. You’re all there supporting the same cause, which is bigger than just this race, the volunteers or the runners.
